Local Color on The Loop Issue 6: Erika Halm

Ting-Li Wang | 11/27/2018 | Blog, Methow Valley, The Great Outdoors, Winter Fun

As the new Outreach and Access Manager of Methow Trails, Erika Kercher Halm is tasked with spreading the word about North America’s largest cross country ski network connecting over 120 miles of trails in Okanogan County.  Working with over 175 landowners who generously allow public trail access on their properties, Halm seeks to expand and improve access of the trails by building relationships with private landowners and various federal and state land agencies.  The resulting world-class system of interconnecting trails is a source of tourism revenue, outdoor fun and civic pride for the Methow Valley.  “There is nothing like it in the country,” Halm said.

Staffed with a team of 10 trail groomers in the winter, the trails are readied overnight for cross-country skiing, fat biking and snowshoeing on routes connecting Mazama, Winthop and Sun Mountain.  Once spring arrives, exploration on the trails continues with mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking.  There is something to do for kids and adults all year round.  Halm is excited to ski this winter with her young daughter, Aurora, in a stroller with skis and dog, Keta.  “It’s fun to connect with everybody who is out there experiencing it, in this beautiful place,” said Halm. “You are out enjoying nature, connecting with your neighbors or people visiting the valley.”

Whether you are looking to ski alongside your dog, take in the stunning mountain views on the Rendezvous Trail or read children's stories on a self-guided storybook tour (kids under 17 ski free everyday), the Methow Trails offers something unique for everyone.
